马赛儿, the latter, is my Chinese name. It was given to me by colleagues in my first job in China. It’s a transliteration of my real name. The first two characters mean horse and race, the third has no obvious meaning.
马猴尔 is a contraction of the characters for horse and monkey; the first because it’s part of my Chinese name, and the second because, while at Bath, ‘friends’ nicknamed me after a certain ape-like character in Friends, the sitcom.
To confuse things even more, I’m 猪 (zhu), a pig, not a horse nor a monkey.
